CultureMap Closes First Round of Funding

HOUSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Today CultureMap.com announced that it completed its first round of financing at the end of 2009. The site, the first ever Mapazine, covers local cultural events and serves as an insider’s guide to the cities it serves, starting with Houston, Texas. The move comes as CultureMap.com seeks to acquire additional editorial talent in addition to sales and marketing staff as it prepares for its international expansion.
Overwhelming interest in the site has allowed the company to accelerate its financing efforts to a second round, which is currently in progress. The positive momentum and support will allow CultureMap to increase the speed and scope of its expansion plans for 2010-2011.
Last fall CultureMap garnered a great deal of local and national attention when it announced that both Shelby Hodge and Clifford Pugh, longtime veteran journalists at the Houston Chronicle, would join the online site. Clifford Pugh filled the position as Editor in Chief and Shelby Hodge as Editor at Large.
As traditional print media shifts its focus to digital distribution – and more and more people are getting their news and local information online – CultureMap is well positioned as it makes Houston the first of multiple cities for international expansion.
